padBattery Longstreet<br>by Don Troiani

Just after noon September 17, 1862, the Battle of Antietam took a critical turn for Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Gen. James Longstreet saw the Union attackers were advancing fast; he summoned every piece of artillery to take up position in the Piper Farm apple orchard. After their cannoneers dropped, wounded or dead, Longstreet's staff members dismounted and began working the pieces themselves.
